Business trips have taken us out of the area for the last week or so, so we've missed the newest political TV ads. Two have stood out.
In this first one, Julie Lassa has one of Sean Duffy's former co-workers in the Ashland District Attorney's office quietly take an ax to Mr. Duffy's record as DA. It's just brutal.
We didn't give Ms. Lassa much of a chance before this. She may make it a fight yet.
Contrast that with Terry Moulton's new ad where he has his adult daughter (and treasurer) defend him from "attacks" by Pat Kreitlow.
We would link it, but Moulton has yet to put it up on the Internet. Hopefully he never will. It makes him look pathetically weak, especially since we have not seen or heard an ad attacking Terry personally on anything yet. The only thing we have seen is a mail piece put out by some independent group that called Terry too "extreme" on women's issues and listed what was either his cell phone or home phone number.
Now, we will give him that the use of a personal phone number was out of line and should be made illegal. But in 2008, a pro-GOP independent group gave out the personal cell phone number of his opponent with no comment from Terry. Couple that with the fact that he voted against a full disclosure bill for independent group ads, it's hard to feel any sympathy for him.
Someone who has run for office 5 times is no longer allowed to be shocked... shocked... to find unscrupulous behavior happening in campaigns, especially after refraining from trying to change it.
The matrydom defense is usually saved as the last act of a desperate candidate. It can't be good that Mr. Moulton is using it with 5 weeks to go.
